Understanding decongestant and Antihistamine

It is common to have a general misconception about how decongestant and antihistamine medications works. It is important to understand thoroughly how each medication assimilates and adapt to individuals medication condition. There are few similarities, however to understand each of these medications it is important to distinguish and know decongestant vs antihistamine. The basic different between decongestant and antihistamine is the former acts as a nasal congestion reliever and the latter is a calming agent, which assists in calming, promote better sleep and fights related allergy symptoms in a person suffering from cough and cold symptoms.

Decongestant

A decongestant or sometimes referred to as a nasal decongestant is a drug or medication that is primarily used to relive nasal congestions; they are times when decongestant is paired with antihistamines to lessen the effects of decongestant. Decongestants work by narrowing the blood vessels in the nasal membranes, thus reducing the inflammation and/or swelling. It also helps to reduce the mucous produced during respiratory infections like sinus, mid-ear infections etcetera. Decongestants are available without prescriptions from most pharmacies. The common ingredients in decongestants are pseudoephedrine or phenylephrine.

Antihistamine

The main purpose of using an antihistamines is to calm a patient while suffering from respiratory infections like common cold or cough; it also aids the patient suffering from these conditions in promoting better sleep, and even suppress vomiting tendencies along with fighting against related allergy symptoms that can awaken other possible reactions or medical conditions to the patient. Although most antihistamine is used to fight common cold, they are also used to treat allergic reactions that lead to hay fever, sneezing, itching and irritation to nose and eyes, swelling, rashes, runny nose and similar allergic reactions.

Decongestant Vs Antihistamine

The important thing to remember while understanding the differences between these types of medication is that it is not the same, but together or when paired together it helps the patient recover from the medical condition quicker. Antihistamines cover wider grounds than decongestants; they do not target one effect like decongestants but helps the patient combat other factor that is associated with a medical condition and/or trigger other medical reactions. However, even if both these type of medications are paired together to lessen the effect the side effects of each medication will not cancel each other.

While understanding decongestant Vs antihistamine, it is important to acknowledge that both these are independent drugs and they each have a specific purpose and when paired together they help lessen the effects of the medical condition but not necessarily work as an alternative.
